What’s the Best Healthy Habit?
What’s the best Healthy Habit to incorporate into your life?
Probably the best healthy habit is to prepare and cook food yourself as much as possible. That way you know exactly what you are eating, it also allows you to –
- make healthy changes to favourite recipes
- add in extra veggies
- use leftovers for next day lunches
- batch cook to make the week easy
Make healthy changes to favourite recipes
Switching an ingredient or two can make a big difference, for instance, you can change most full-fat cheeses to low-fat options with no compromise on flavour, one of my favourite swaps is using low-fat garlic and herb soft cheese to make a Carbonara style pasta dish.
Make adding extra veggies a healthy habit
One of the best hacks is to add in extra veggies. Its especially good if you have a fussy eater, for example, I don’t like the consistency of mushrooms but love the flavour and they are full of B-Vitamins so I know they are good for my health, what do I do? I chop them really fine and add them into my pasta sauce…problem solved
Also adding veggies means you don’t have to cook them separately so it saves on cook pots
Use left-overs for lunch
Fed up with boring sandwiches? Let left-overs brighten your next day lunch. So many dishes taste better the day after, think Curry, Lasagna, or Shepherds Pie.
Batch Cooking for the week ahead
A really good healthy habit to incorporate is batch cooking. Make your week a little easier by doing some of your cooking for the week ahead at the weekend. When you first start batch cooking, you might find it easier to cook just one or two recipes then gradually work your way up to a fridge/freezer full of food!
Easy recipes to start with include Chilli con Carne, Curry and Bolognese
Caution: Allow hot food to cool thoroughly before storing in the fridge or freezer.
Remember your freezer is your best friend! A little bit of organization and before you know it it’s a habit that can change your health for the better 🙂
Caution: Never refreeze anything once it has thawed.
