BPA’s and Parabens – Hormone Disruptors

Rebecca Jarman Menopause, Wellness BPA, chemicals, hormones, Paraben, toxins

BPA’s and Parabens are toxic substances found in everyday packaging products

BPA (Bisphenol A)

A chemical used in plastics such as plastic bottles, packaging, storage containers and is used to line canned goods.

Parabens

Synthetic compounds used as preservatives in cosmetic, beauty and personal care products

Research has shown some 90% of groceries contain measurable amounts of Parabens and while an individual product may not contain harmful levels collectively (because they are in so many products)  they can overload our bodies

Both BPA’s and Parabens are thought to be endocrine (Hormone) disruptors and the health problems associated with them are documented including –

  • Cancers such as breast and prostate
  • Heart disease
  • Thyroid problems

They disrupt our endocrine system because they can imitate hormones and interfere with

  • production
  • secretion
  • transport
  • action
  • function
  • elimination of natural hormones

They mimic and behave similarly to Estrogen which can affect our hormones during puberty and menopause

Unfortunately, they are present in so much we buy and use so its almost impossible to avoid them completely, but there are some simple changes you can make to reduce exposure –

  • Use glass food storage
  • Look for paraben-free products
  • Buy unpackaged groceries
  • Switch to a BPA free reusable water bottle

Using fewer chemicals and packaging won’t just be good for your health but better for the environment, so be vigilant and check labels
